- Remove Stain
Either a water or oil based deck stripper will be required depending on what stain is currently on your deck. The correct stripper will need to be generously applied to help remove the stain.
- Pressure cleaning
A pressure washer will remove the deck stripper and will also remove any other dirt and debris. For decks that require extra attention chlorine bleach cleaners can be used to remove mould and mildew.
- Sanding
Sanding is the next step to smooth the rough and splintered edges. If there is one job we recommend you leave to the professionals it is sanding. Many people attempt to do it themselves, which can lead to damage to the surface if the incorrect technique is used. Even the smallest of imperfections caused by incorrect sanding methods will be noticeable. Incorrect use or inexperience using the high-powered equipment can cause damage to your deck that will then require filling.
- Cleaning
After sanding, the deck needs to be free from dust. Cleaning is again recommended and then the deck needs to be left for at least a day or two to ensure the wood is completely dry before re-staining.
- Oiling and Staining
The final step is the oiling and staining to seal the deck against the damaging effects of the sun, which can cause wood to shrink and/or crack. There are many options to choose from but we recommend oil with UV protection that offers protection to your deck and resistance to mould and fungus.
The process does take time but if done by professionals you will be sitting on your deck sipping cocktails in no time!
